VOYCE Rally and Student Canvass to Get out the Vote for Education!

01 March 2011

On Monday, February 21, 300 VOYCE youth held a non-partisan "Get out the Vote for our Future" Day of Action to call attention to education issues in the lead-in to Chicago's mayoral election. Students knocked on the doors of over 5000 registered voters to let them know that their futures were at stake in this election. Check out what Nora Rollins, a student leader from the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), had to say about it...

My name is Nora and I am senior at a Gage Park High School, a mentor with VOYCE, and a leader with SWOP. From my perspective the VOYCE rally and GOTV event that VOYCE had on February 21st was magnificent. We had all the different VOYCE students and their organizations come out to represent the work that we have been doing and to make a difference in the mayoral race. Everyone was very enthusiastic and excited especially for the door knocking. During the rally we had students playing the bongo's and different drums making things more fun and music for us to dance to. After the rally we arrived at the Inner-city Muslim Action Network which was our GOTV headquarters. There Sarah an organizer with SWOP spoke to us regarding the importance of the job we were going to do and trained us. Going door to door trying to persuade people to go out and vote was not very hard until the snow started to fall. All the mentors and our mentees still managed to stay warm and had fun with the snow. After the day was over, 30 students had knocked on 843 doors in the neighborhood, which was inspiring.
